We like to think that by us going on a trip, we're helping out that country, or that host community. However, the sad truth is that's not how it typically happens.
"Tourism Leakage" is the way in which revenue generated by tourism is lost to other countries' economies - not the country you're visiting. (Uh oh!) During this talk, you'll learn about tourism leakage, and how travel affects local communities in both negative and positive ways.
Get tips on what to look out for, and how to research so that your next trip benefits the local economy in a positive way.
Use the tips you learn here so you can feel good about traveling, no matter how far you're flying or how popular the destination is.
NIKKI PADILLA RIVERA became a tour guide, after seeing tourists ‘do NYC wrong’. She's been helping people fall in love with her city for over 9 years. For the past 5 years, Nikki was Guide Success Manager at Intrepid Urban Adventures ensuring the team of 1000+ tour guides gave amazing local experiences. More importantly, she acted as an advocate for the local guides, empowering them to teach their guests to be better travelers.
TripKinetics (https://tripkinetics.com) - Nikki is setting up a 'mystery shopper' service, to help elevate the quality of tours once travel resumes.
NextGenTravel (https://nextgentravelnyc.weebly.com) - Nikki is the co-founder of this networking group that fosters innovation in travel by bringing together a diverse group of people from across the industry.
Global Guide Alliance (https://globalguidealliance.com) - Nikki, along with two other guide trainers, started this alliance as a space for tour and museum guides across the world to create community and empower each other to grow professionally to keep the experience interesting & inspired (for both guests and guides).
Nikki has a passion for making sure that tours are done well and benefit the communities that they're in. Join us to learn how to make sure the tourism dollars that we're spending are making it into the pockets of the locals in the communities we're visiting!
