Description

In this talk, Founder & Editor in Chief of The Black Explorer magazine, Ella Paradis, will share her perspective on the decolonizing travel writing movement by challenging who gets to be called a travel writer and who gets to tell the story of the places we explore and the people who live there.

She will be joined by Founder and Creative Director of the ìrìn journal, Mimi Aborowa, which showcases African cities that have big stories to tell, cities that are often overlooked, misinterpreted, with the hopes of updating people’s perspectives regarding that place.

The Black Explorer champions the Black travel community as well as informs, inspires and advocates for intrepid explorers. This multimedia platform exists to to amplify the profile of Black travelers, to inspire the travel industry to see Black travelers, and to take readers on journeys though the lens of the Black creator. The Black Explorer is here to inspire travelers to make travel decisions that are least harmful and most respectful to the environments being explored.

ìrìn journal is an independent print magazine that explores African Culture through travel, people, and communities. In each issue, the journal focuses on a different African city an shines a light on the diverse stories that come together to make up the unique identity of the city. By collaborating with local talent and voices from artists, chefs, musicians, travel enthusiasts, farmers, and economists, they get as much insight into the heart of the city culture.
