Description

Money makes the world go round! But more than that, it can help you to go around the world.

However, there are a ton of creative ways to travel when you have a really small budget. Don't let your money troubles stop you from going out and experiencing international travel!

Our speaker Calen set off to cross the US on a bicycle alone, with just a $300 gift card and a bunch of determination! They used their resourcefulness and in-kind exchanges to make sure they had a place to sleep, food to eat, and things to do. Despite having meager funds, Calen was still able to do lots of sightseeing from snorkeling in Hawaiian shores to hiking the Redwoods, and made so many incredible friendships along the way.

Calen wants to teach other people how to travel on a really small budget, and do so with zest and safety in mind.

In this talk, Calen will teach you how to go big on a small budget. They’ll be covering:

  • Finding transportation to get you from place to place
  • Securing lodging and places to sleep as you go
  • Getting food to eat on the cheap
  • Working and finding jobs as you go
  • Make friends on the road
  • Find meaningful experiences and entertainment
  • Tips for bartering instead of paying cash

Calen Ann Otto is a queer travel blogger who explores the big wide world on a very small budget. They were bit by the travel bug in 2014 after spending the year as an exchange student in Chile and have been traveling ever since. Inspired by their love of meeting strangers and sharing their incredible stories, Calen created the Unruly Travel blog where they share photos, videos, articles, and podcast episodes from their unique travels in hopes to inspire others to get out and grow. Calen has been to 5 continents, 35 states, 20 National Parks, and more than 20 countries as a vegan and is passionate about doing the least amount of harm wherever they go. They wrote and published The Art Of Unruly Travel On A Budget travel guide book to make travel more accessible to all.
