Traveling to "Dangerous" Places: How to Plan & Assess the Risk

The world is your oyster, but some places have a bad reputation. How can you know what truly represents a risk, how to navigate those risks, and what is just unfairly represented by the media? Fear not: there are ways to go about this!

Online Virtual Event ·  Thursday, June 12th @ 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET

In this presentation, you will discover resources and tactics that will help prepare you to assess risks, look beyond the fearmongering, travel confidently, and ultimately have deeper travel experiences.

John McKenzie of John The Traveler has more than 25 years of travel experience in many off-the-beaten-track places. He is well-connected to the “extreme travel” community and has been to “dangerous” places ranging from Mexico City to Mogadishu.

At the completion of this session, you should be able to:

  • Differentiate between true danger and media hype

  • Assess your personal travel risk for just about any destination

  • Develop a plan for traveling to destinations with reputations for being unsafe

  • Discover options for more rewarding travel instead of just ticking off bucket list items

This event is for curious travelers, adventure seekers, country counters, or anyone who is keen on having a deeper travel experience.

John McKenzie is an avid traveler, content creator, group trip leader, and a champion for promoting curiosity through travel. He has been to more than 60 nations across all 7 continents over the last 30 years, including living abroad in a developing country for more than 2 years. He has been on several podcasts, attended multiple travel conferences, and encourages people to embrace curiosity and exploration when traveling. He also has a Master’s of Arts degree in Geography. John is originally from Kansas but currently lives in the Washington, DC metro area with his husband.
