How Travel Can Change Your Life in Retirement

You retired, now what? So many people have dreams of retirement in Hawaii, spending their days in the sunshine, and reading books in a hammock tied between two palm trees. Sounds idyllic, right?

David did just that. He really thought retirement life would be all sunshine and palm trees in Hawaii. After a successful 37-year career in journalism across the United States, winding down in paradise seemed a likely ending. But when the retirement recliner started chafing his butt, he felt a deep desire for something more exciting.

So he emptied his life of all the clutter and put the rest in a backpack to hit the road, not knowing with any certainty what he was getting into. That was 6 years ago. Since then, he’s been to 34 countries on 6 continents, living the retirement life of his dreams.

In this presentation, he’ll talk about his experiences as a senior solo traveler and what he learned about himself, life, and the world along the way.

      Join us to learn...

      • Following the 14 Commandments of Travel that he stumbled upon shortly before his journey began
      • Taking care of your physical health, eating well, sleeping well, and keeping a positive mental attitude
      • Listening to yourself on the road and doing what YOU want to do, without automatically trusting the advice of others
      • The joys of talking to strangers
      • Wearing a smile, carrying small candies to hand out, and always offering to lend a helping hand if you can
      • Not letting your guard down. Learning to recognize the bad guys and take the necessary precautions
      • Learning how traveling solo can be the pathway to your heart and soul, helping you become a better, stronger person in all aspects of life!

If you’re thinking of traveling during retirement, join us. David’s talk will inform and inspire you!

      About our speaker

David Hunter Bishop (@dhb) completed a long, tumultuous, award-winning career in community journalism across the United States before retiring in Hilo, Hawaii, in 2013. But in less than three years, divorced, bored, and dissatisfied with the prospects for a better life in retirement, he transformed himself into a senior solo adventure traveler at the age of 64. He’s wandered the world with no home or permanent address ever since. He was a successful politics and public affairs blogger in Hawaii and has continued writing travel blogs from the road about his travel-related thoughts and experiences at his website, realontheroad.com.

David loves sports – his last job in Hawaii was as a high school golf coach – and he loves almost all types of music, as well as reading and writing.

David won a bronze award in the 13th annual Solas Awards for best travel writing in 2019, for his short story, “Saysha, What Happened?“, and has had his feature articles published online at Go Nomad, Expat Focus, and Rad Season. Malaysian author and journalist James Ritchie profiled David in the New Sarawak (Malaysia) Tribune newspaper in 2019.

David also likes to mention fun facts about himself like having worn a leather helmet as a high school football player in the late 1960s, and being among the last players in the nation to drop-kick an extra point successfully in a league-sanctioned game in 1966. He’s also very proud of his two adult sons, James and Mackey, both of whom were born in Hawaii.
