How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint by Traveling More

    Online

Do you feel a twinge of eco-guilt when you book that flight? When you fill up your van at the gas station before a long road trip? Do you worry knowing that it adds to the climate crisis? Most of us are too addicted to travel to stop and rethink how we go about it. Our speaker Andy (a biology professor and leader of sustainable programs at Minerva University) is on a mission to figure out net-zero travel and wants to share what he's learned thus far, so we can take the same steps in our own *travel* lives.

In this workshop, we'll start with a travel plan and then implement five strategies to make it more climate friendly. We encourage everyone to bring their own travel plan to try the strategies themselves. Traveling less is one way to be more sustainable, but you'll learn how to reduce your trip's carbon footprint by traveling... (dare we say it) MORE!

    East African Safari Journeys

    Online
    Virtual Event Virtual Event

In East Africa, you can make your safari dreams a reality. Steven Tomusange is a native Ugandan whose passions for childhood bird watching turned into a safari company in East Africa called Green Zones Safaris that takes adventurous travelers through the lush countries of Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda. So many people dream of visiting where Steven calls home. When you see the photographs, you'll understand why. This region is packed with jaw-dropping, wanderlust-inducing landscapes filled with animals frolicking (or lazing) around. Safaris are a great way to breakaway from the confines of daily life and immerse yourself in the majesty of nature.

Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel

    Online
    Virtual Event Virtual Event

There’s nothing like "vagabonding" or taking time off from your normal life — from six weeks to four months to two years — to discover and experience the world on your own terms. In this one-of-a-kind handbook, veteran travel writer Rolf Potts explains how anyone armed with an independent spirit can achieve the dream of extended overseas travel.

In the book "Vagabonding", learn about financing your travel time, determining which destination, adjusting to life on the road, working and volunteering overseas, handling travel adversity, and eventually, re-assimilating back into ordinary life. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to experience the world with their own eyes and on their own terms.

Slow Travel, Language Learning & Personal Growth

    Online
    Virtual Event Virtual Event

Take control of how your life unfolds by curating healthy, positive travel experiences and transform into the best version of yourself as you grow. Learn a different way to look at exploring the world. Not only could it be for learning new cultures, but it could also be seen as an opportunity to learn about yourself and develop areas that you might not be able to do at home. You may seek to be a better version of yourself. It's why for our new year's resolutions you declare you'll workout more, finally learn a second language, or read more. Unfortunately, without the proper structures in place, those resolutions don't have much of a chance of panning out.

Travel, on the other hand, is a great way to shake up your day-to-day routine and give yourself a better shot at changing your life. Travel gives you the space to be someone else and improve your life. It allows you to say, “What would the new me do?” and then do it without worrying that someone you know might notice. Slow travel (especially when you learn a new language and/or go solo) don't just open new worlds for you, but they create a whole new inner journey within you too. Travel forces you out of your comfort zones and helps hit a lot of your personal development goals all at once. It puts you into situations that force you to better yourself. It won’t instantly solve your problems — only you can do that — but at least, on the road, you have a clean slate to try. It is the ultimate way to become a better, more confident you.

Travel Hacking: The Good, the Bad, & the In-Between

    Online
    Virtual Event Virtual Event

Many people want to fly from destination to destination using points and miles instead of their precious cash. Many travelers desire the luxuries of hotel rooms, over-water bungalows, and accommodations with room service, but they don't want to foot the bill.

Luckily, this is where travel hacking comes in handy!

Traveling hacking is the art of collecting frequent flier, hotel, and credit card points and airline miles and redeeming them for free travel. But it’s not about spending lots of money — the idea is to “hack the system” and use rewards programs against themselves to get lots of points and miles without spending a lot of money or traveling a lot. You leverage these systems to your benefit.

It's the best way to travel when you don’t have any money is to take money out of the equation. OK, not completely. While you can travel really, really cheaply, some money is required. You are going to need some money for travel. But you don’t need as much as you think you do, especially if you work to make your two biggest expenses — accommodation and flights — virtually free.

    Travel Souvenir Show & Tell

    Online
    Virtual Event Virtual Event

Do you save postcards, room keys, plane tickets, jewels, or other souvenirs from your travels? How about rocks, shells, or sea glass from your travels near and far? Do you have an journal that you got from a temple in Thailand? A painting you bought off the streets of Ghana? A soup bowl you got in Turkey's Grand Bizarre? Bring it to adult “show & tell” and share its (and in turn your) story.

It may be true that the best things in life aren't things... yet things have a way of holding onto the memories of some of the best things in life. And if you’re part of this network, travel is one of the best things in life!

All too often we keep these memories to ourselves when we know that sharing them not only lights us up, but passes the spark onto others. So let’s show the photos and objects from our adventures to relive and connect more deeply with ourselves and our fellow travelers on this amazing journey.

If you remember show and tell from elementary school days that’s what this story-sharing gathering will be all about. It’s highly interactive. If you'd like to participate, bring something (anything!) and tell us about one of your travel experiences. If you'd like to observe, you're welcome to do that too.

Walk away from this sessions feeling more connected to your travels and your new travel friends.
